Makkaji Chowka: an MGP initiative
Permalink

Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP), in association with the Institute of Engineers, has lined up a 'town-hall'-type meeting to further the debate on the Makkaji Chowka issue. Thought of highlighting the event for wider noticeablity, as Dr.Shenoy's initial announcement in this regard has been  buried in the thread of messages in an online debate on the issue, initiated by Mr Bapu Satyanarayana wearing his MGP convenor's cap.

Topic: Makkaji Chowka

Date: July 10 (what time, Dr Shenoy ?)

Venue: Institute of Engineers (Mecca for meaningful meetings)

I don't know what MGP has in mind by way of formating the meeting. Having set the ball rolling Dr.Shenoy ought to be the moderator/master of ceremony. If the proposed meeting is seen as a spin-off of our online debate Mr Satyanarayana could initiate the proceedings. It would be useful to invite persons knowledgeable enough to talk on the issue from town planning & architects association, builders association, educational institutions and the traffic police (in view of a suggestion that M' Chowk is better converted into a multi-level parking lot and the Sayajji Rd. stretch in front of Devaraja Market be made a no-vehicle zone). Some time back Star of Mysore ran an extensive feature on legal and procedural tangle involving Makkaji Chowk land. Maybe the feature writer and his source of information could be invited to give their take on the issue.

I'm not mentioning concerned officials, corporators, and MP, because of expectation that the truly public-sprited among them should join in without expecting special invitation.

The meeting place is Institute of Engineers

Date July 10th Monday

Time 6.00 PM

We have yet to decide the agenda. We were planning to invite Mr. Doraga, the director of Mysore Univeristy's School of Design. Their students had done different models of Makkaji Chowka and they have several ideas on that.

I have talked to Bapu Satyanarayan and requested him to get people from Sarswatipuram to be involved in the discussion. I am sure Vijendra Rao to be one of the active particpants. We need to get at least three or four corporators to be active particpants since they are the ones who voted for makkaji Chowka. I am not sure our MCC commissioner will attend the meeting. But it would be good if he could attend.

The lawyer Arun Kumar who had filed the PIL may also participate. He has still not contacted us. He may feel that MGP should invite him, rather than he getting in touch with us. He is not a stranger to MGP. During the corporation election, he was one fo the five indpendent candidates who got help from MGP members considerable help.

We need all the help from mymsyore readers. Mymysore did have a role in the genesis of this public debate. One of the trigger points as GVK stated was the nore posted on mymyosre by MGP executive members Bapu Satyanarayan. Press has already given wide coverage to this public debate. Now we have to do individual canvassing. Even those who do not live in Mysore, can contact their friends and relatives and ask them to take active part in the debate. In a democracy it is only the people power which is people particpation that will make the difference.

As scheduled there was an interactive meeting on 10 July. It was houseful and quite enlightening. Bsically there were two views expressed. One was the counsel of despair and that it is too late in the day to do anything while majority of others argued for taking the judiciary route to stall the ill considered move to build a mall. Already Arun Kumar has taken up the issue with the high court which boomranged and it is proposed to appeal to the Supreme Court. He gave the lurid details of the extent of loot and the scam. Certianly quite few must have lined their pockets to surfeit. Though all the previous 65 corporators were invited as well as some Mayors nobody turned up except for three who held important positions in the corporation in earlier years who spoke giving the history of Makkaji Chowk. Even here they were only saying that nothing much can be done. Bhamy Shenoi had made an economic analysis on some broad assumptions according to which the MCC was badly losing. Earlier the school of design presented few good alternatives. I also spoke and reiterated what I had mentioned earlier and added an additional point that if the mall comes the traders in Devaraja marked area would have to down their shutters as the people would head for the mall who will certainly sell cheaper than any retailer. This has been proved both in Delhi and Mumbai making the residential traders fast becoming an extinct species. The logic for malls to sell cheaper is that they bank on bulk sales with small margin of profit. Once people accustomed to razzle dazzle of mall environment they will not chuck it even if the prices are raised.Of course one of the corporators said that Mysore people have not much money unlike Bangaloreans  and the Maveric enterprise will have to fold their business. It is shorn of logic with many IT shops being set up and peopel will certinly prefer to purchase in Mysore rather than go through hell in commuting in Bangalore till of course Mysore also becomes  By then the enterprise will have made its money.
