Weakness of US school students in subjects such as math and physics proved a boon for our teachers in India. Nimi Kurian, of The Hindu, explains how some computer companies have devised programmes for e-tutoring classes. The companies employ full-time and part-time teachers for the purpose. Here is an opportunity for our teaching community to shed their inhibitions about computers, and learn to benefit from the Internet communication technology.
Not every teacher who is well-versed in his subject, and good in a class-room setting can be an effective online tutor without interactive communication skills. Swati Chopra, a teacher with Career Launcher says online teaching calls for patience, and propensity to be responsive to the needs of faceless students. Such teachers have to be liberal with praise, and be encouraging at every step, which could even mean coaxing online learners. Getting irritated or using harsh words is no option in an online setting.
Career Launcher, says Ms Kurian, has devised an e-tutoring method that includes a diagnostic test of students, so that appropriate teaching schedule could be drawn up for them. During the course a student is put through regular online lectures, assignments, doubts-clearing session, seminars, and an evaluation test. (Source – Nimi Kurian, The Hindu, Dec.9, 2005)
