Infosys, a land-grabber ?

Infosys has built its global training centre on 350 acres in Mysore. Other acquisitions in Karnataka include 78 acres in Bangalore, and 311 of the 350 acres the government has earmarked for IT special economic zone in Mangalore.

Reacting to Mr Deve Gowda’s charge of indiscriminate land acquisition, Infosys press release (The Hindu) mentioned that its Mangalore land in the IT designated area was acquired at the market rate; and the only 50 percent of it was usable as work space because of the undulated topography. Infosys plans to invest Rs.300 crores on the project, which will create 6000 jobs in the first phase.

Infosys gave this info in response to Mr Gowda’s query to the government seeking info regarding comparative employment generation by other companies – Wipro, HP and IBM – that have not been provided government acquired land.

As for the relevance of such line of enquiry a ‘Deccan Herald’ letter to editor put it succinctly: “Allotting land to companies that are firing on all cylinders, and bringing prosperity to any area, is something that is common practice all over the world. We would be delighted to have Infosys move to Oklahoma City and bringall the jobs with it,” – Satish Dasharathy, Oklajoma, USA.

I should not even try to dignify Mr. Gowda's accusation of landgrabbing by Mr. Murthy or Infosys by speaking up.  But silence can be mininterpreted but can never be misquoted. Therefore, let me say this.  I am truly proud of Mr. Murthy not because he is wealthy, bright, successful, a Kannadiga or a Mysorean but because he is a good human being. He is an "exemplary"  role model who has touched the hearts of many by being modest and an honest simple man.  I wish I could have said this when Mr. Gowda became the Prime Minister of India.

Sri Narayana Murthy was one of the esteemed students of Sarada Vilasa High School (of those days) and was a year senior to me. Many of my friends who used to be his classmates or juniors in NIE have such glowing tributes to him for his compassion, simplicity, veracity and magnanimity despite all his achievements. I echo the same sentiments like Sri B. R. Ramaprasad

I totally understand everyone's view on Sri Narayana Murthy & Devegowda's, I don't think being a Mysorean or being a Bangalorean or an Indian.. is not the matter to discuss or blog about.. I feel that we should be talking or writing on how well the city is developing with these kind of establishments & people coming into Mysore City from different states...

Along with the development, we also face one another hurdle of prices shooting up.. and everyone knows what I am talking about.

My first take on this situation is "If you can't do something better for the City, allow others to do". as such major Industries set up way back in Mysore are either closed or dying. like the Ideal Jawa, MMC and so on and so forth...

sometime back Wipro backed out of Mysore City for reasons known to them.. but can anyone provide me an answer to the following question..

"After making all the necessary arrangements with respect to infrastructure, land etc to a particular company., what should the government be doing if that particular company backs out of the project? should we consider it as our bad luck or can that company hold the government for ransom?

All the major IT companies came to Mysore City including infosys because of the guidelines provided by STPI that any company setting up an STPI unit in Mysore City can avail a 10 year tax free benefits and that's how we saw the entry of IT companies.

The mindset should change for the better..

Sri. Narayana Murthy shouldn't have quit the board just coz Sri. Devegowda insulted him or harrassed him.. he should have stuck on with his job and his intentions.. there is a saying that goes "Barking dogs never bite" .. "don't worry be happy"

there are lots of "Ifs and Buts".. we need always think towards getting the job done.. rather finding problems in the system.

The monumental ignorance, arrogance and self serving utterances of our political leaders are astounding. After having bankrupted the local and national public treasuries, ruined industrial sectors that could earn foreign exchange, made millions (or is it billions) by corrupt practices they have the temerity to question a ‘KARMA YOGI’ in the truest sense of the word. Their lack of intellect to understand, even minimally, the issues of the state, outcomes of successful entrepreneurship beneficial to the society at large, and their inability to comprehend the deleterious consequences of dimwitted statements are mind boggling. The deafening silence on the part of the so called leaders of commerce, government and community is appalling.  At the least, those of us who have this platform, have an obligation to straighten up our spines and berate the charade of these charlatans, passing off as societal leaders and hope none of their ilk will ever again stoop to mouth such imbecilities.

I have broken my silence and my intention not to get involved with the blog, just to say a few words about Narayana Murthy.

Narayana Murthy was one of my students in NIE in 1960s and was a brilliant student with compassion and character. He had very sharp intellect and was never arrogant. He and his brother who were my students had high standard of morals. He is still one of the four best students I had had privilege to teach during the past 35 years. He would have succeeded in any career.
I reject that he would build an institution with does not uphold his high standards. I had not seen him during the past 35 years, but last year having heard about an honorary doctorate awarded to him sent him a congratulatory e-mail message though belatedly. His replied immediately with the same politeness that I associated him with in 1965.

Mr Gowda is a pygmy when compared to Narayana Murthy and a jealous one too.

A theif always thinks the other also to be also thieves. Having been able to create huge assests out of thin air since it is difiicult to have such assets on a poor farmer's earnings (that is what Deve Gowda claims he is) or on the salary of a PWD engineer (that is what he started his career), he thinks other like Narayanmurthy may be a land grabber.

What is unfortunate is that there are some non politicians also are inlcined to think having heard this story several times from Deve Gowda think like that.

In today's India, we have lost the sense to discriminate bewteen honest and dishonest people. We think all politicians to be dishonest which is unfortuante. So also any successful businessman to be dishonest.

We need to congratulate ourselves that our city has been able to produce a person like Narayanmurthy who ha shown how one can develop a company despite being honest. Earlier there was another such individual who of course has not risen to such heights as Narayanmurthy. He is late Raghuram Prabhu, the founder of Ganesh Beedies. He was a primary school drop out from a town of Bantwal since he could not pay his school fees. When the income taxes and wealth taxes were combined were more than 100%, Ganesh Beedies under his management did not hesitate to pay those taxes. But today he is an unsung hero.

We need to honor heroes like Narayanmurthy, Raghuram Prabhu and throw into the dustbins of history people like Deve Gowda. But do we? When he comes to the city, how many of us go his darshan? How much of media attention is heaped upon him? What an irony!

It is true that MGP has filed a case against Infosys. This is because of the alleged illegal activities that might have been conducted at lower level of strating work in Mysore before getting all the environmental clearnces. This may not be not known to the top management of Infosys. Of course a good management will not allow such things happen. But who is perfect? One such act does not make a company dishonest. Infosys would not have become a world class one without upholding extremely high ethicla values and for that we should congratulate Narayanmurthy.

One should visit the Infosys centre in Mysore to see the wonderful campus Mr. Narayana Murthy has built, making best of the land allotted to his company. The beautifully designed buildings are equipped with most modern gadgets to train young boys and girls at this international centre of repute. Young boys and girls come from all over the world for training at this campus.

After going round this campus, Union Finance Minister Chidambaram remarked, "Are we in the Silicon Valley of the US!?" Mr. Chidambaram, who was inaugurating the silver jubilee of Infosys, described the campus as a symbol of India's economic growth.

When Mr. Murthy visited the NIE to inaugurate its new building, he came on to the dais and seeing his former Principal Mr. Aprameya, the IT giant of India prostrated to him. He remembered the sacrifices made by Mr. Aprameya in building an engineering college of reputation.

Besides Mr. Murthy and Mr. Raghuram Prabhu, one more person who needs to be remembered is F.K.Irani for the contribuiton he has made for the growth of Mysore. Coming from Bombay, he invested whatever money he had in the famous Ideal Jawa factory, providing jobs to a large number of local people. He gave a big boost to the industrial development of Mysore, in particular small scale industries and put Mysore on the industrial map of the State. Associating himself with a number of social and cultural organisations, late Mr. Irani revived the Dasara celebrations, Mysore races and a number of other activities, which had been given up.
