My Bandipur visits

I had occasion to stay at two places during my Bandipur visits in 2005. In February last, my mom and I stayed at the Bandipur Safari Lodge, run by Jungle Lodges & Resorts. I was impressed by the excellent customer service, the rooms and the tasty food. They organized Safari and trekking..The forest guides were pretty knowledgeable about the birds and animals. The environment around the lodge was very peaceful.

Last month, in December, we stayed at the Tusker Trail resort. In my opinion, I was not happy with the rooms and especially their food. This Tusker Trail lodge is run by a private party and located in a remote jungle area. But they had good library of wild life books. The roads to this resort are bad and worn out. I do not think the government is even aware of the bad condition of these roads. This lodge, I feel, is not worth the money. There were hardly any birds around. In the morning, I did not hear any birds chirp. This could be because they were afraid of us humans.

Pratibha: Thank you for sharing your personal experience with Bandipur visits in December and February.  Presume Tusker trail and the Bandipur Safari Lodge are both close to one another.

To help those of us who may have similar plans any recommendations on when one ought to go to maximize sightings, pleasure etc? How many days would you recommend staying? And with the food care to help with what types of service were available or you may have availed? How long a drive is it to Bandipur from Mysore City?

Dear Srinivas Rao,

According to the forest guides who have experienced maximum sightings before, August is a good month for maximum sightings. This time of the year, herds of bisons are seen roaming around.  The tigers and the leopards come to hunt these bisons. At the same time wild elephants are also seen in herds. The trees are green everywhere. It is a beautiful sight to watch.

It is good to stay atleast for two days.

In general, vegetarian food is served in every lodge. There are lodges where both vegetarian and nonvegetarion food are served. There is a package tour which includes, lodging, boarding, two safaris in a day, trekking(depending on the situation), elephant ride, wildlife movie. If you go through a travel agent, such as BIT(Bharat International travels), they can do all the bookings for you.

From mysore city, it is about 2-2 1/2 hours drive to Bandipur.
